They Just Don't Get It

When I was a little kid (third grade-ish) I decided I was going to be a priest when I grew up. I was well aware that women were nuns and men were priests but in a confidence reserved for the very young, I was SURE that that would be fixed by the time I was old enough to go to work. Lisa Nath (or was it Nash?) had it all planned out - we were going to be missionaries - she was going to be a nurse and I was going to be a priest. I had forgotten about Lisa and I planning our future while sitting in Mrs. Stivaletti's classroom in St. Mary's grade school in Old Town - until I read Maureen Dowd's column today.

And it followed my own outrage this morning. I was feeling pretty good as the 8 am mass was ending - we were able to wish one another a sign of peace and not one person fell ill - it was a visiting priest so not sure my battle is over yet. But then all that good feeling is erased as an announcement is read to the congregation asking us to please contact our state representatives as a proposed CT bill puts the Catholic Church in that state "at risk." At which point of course my ears perked right up. And my outrage spidey sense is tingling all over.

As a kid, every time there was a second collection for the priest retirement fund, my dad would hand me a dollar or two and with a wink said, "maybe if we give enough, they'll all retire." From his mouth to God's ears, as my grandmother would say.
